How: use a Windows-word on Word Pad file

WordPad is a basic word processor, the Accessories folder in Windows.

WordPad is also useful to try to save a corrupted Word file. WordPad can read Word (.doc), rich text format (.RTF) and text files (TXT). WordPad in Windows 7 can read files Word 2007 or 2010 (.docx). Level of difficulty: Moderately easy

Instructions

    Open a file
  1. 1

Start WordPad, and then on the "file"-menu on the left side of the toolbar.

Click "Open" and click "Files of type" drop down menu in the open dialog box.
  • 2

Select "Word for Windows (* .doc)" as the type of file you want to open.

  • Navigate to the folder in the file where the file is located. Select the file and click "Open" or double click the file name.
  • 3

    Show the file.

  • You can edit the file in the DOC, but you may or may not be able to save it in the original DOC file format. If WordPad can save the file in the DOC format, you receive a prompt. WordPad then saves the file as RTF file. RTF documents can be opened again in Word.
